Mae arfordiroedd Cymru ac Iwerddon yn ffurfio darn helaeth o dirwedd, ac mae asesiadau parthau arfordirol yn darparu dull cyflym, ond manwl, o gasglu gwybodaeth am yr amgylchedd hanesyddol, am ddaeareg a geomorffoleg yr arfordir, ac am erydiad ar amser penodol.
Ers y 1990au mae Asesiadau Parth Arfordirol wedi cael eu cynnal yng Nghymru, yr Alban a Lloegr sy'n dilyn methodoleg debyg yn fras sef:
Mae gwybodaeth a gesglir drwy asesiadau parth arfordirol yn darparu set ddata sylfaen hynod werthfawr am sefydlogrwydd yr arfordir, natur a graddfa archaeoleg y parth arfordirol, y bygythiadau a chyfraddau’r erydiad i'r archaeoleg honno ynghyd ag argymhellion ar gyfer ei rheoli'n briodol. Un canlyniad i'r asesiadau hyn fu mentrau fel Arfordir yng Nghymru, SCHARP (Prosiect Treftadaeth Arfordirol mewn Perygl yr Alban) yn yr Alban a CITiZAN (Rhwydwaith Archaeolegol y Parth Arfordirol a Rhynglanwol) yn Lloegr sy'n gweithio gydag unigolion a chymunedau i ddarparu data ychwanegol a monitro tymor hwy ar yr archaeoleg yn y parth arfordirol. Mae SCHARP a CITiZAN yn defnyddio Ap sy'n caniatáu i wirfoddolwyr gasglu a chyflwyno gwybodaeth, ac mae Ap tebyg yn cael ei ddatblygu gan CHERISH ar gyfer Iwerddon a Chymru.
Yng Nghymru, rydym wedi defnyddio data Lidar CHERISH a gasglwyd ar 6 ynys – y Moelrhoniaid, Seiriol, Enlli, dwy ynys Tudwal a Gwales - fel ein prif set ddata sylfaen, gan greu mapiau archaeolegol newydd sydd wedyn yn cael eu gwirio ar y tir. Yn ystod ymweliadau â’r ynysoedd, rydym hefyd yn cerdded yr arfordir i gofnodi daeareg a geomorffoleg, ac asesu statws erydiad.

The CHERISH site Ferriter’s Castle and Promontory Fort is located on the Ballyferriter Headland, Dingle peninsula in county Kerry. Doon Point (Dún an Fheirtéaraigh) is a long, narrow promontory extending slightly over five hundred metres from north east to south west. This prehistoric fort is one of 95 coastal promontory forts in County Kerry, 42 of which are located on the Dingle peninsula.
This headland sits directly to the north of the Mesolithic- Neolithic transition period site at Ferriter’s Cove. Along the length of the promontory, narrow inlets of the sea are present in two locations due to softer sediments being carved out from the harder lava beds in these areas. These inlets divide the promontory into two distinct areas. These necks have been anthropogenically utilised and adapted in the construction of the Promontory Fort with a series of banks and ditches, forming an outer and inner set of defences. There are a number of hut sites and archaeological features visible within the boundaries of the fort. In the western section of the fort, there are a number of hut sites being heavily impacted by erosion. In the 15th or 16th century, later reuse of the fort occurred when the Anglo-Norman Ferriter family constructed a castle on the inner bank of the outer defences. This tower house was originally a 4-5 story rectangular tower, occupied by the Ferriter Family until the 17th century.
