Illauntannig (SMR KE019-002—-), or Senach’s island, is part of the Maharees in north Co. Kerry. This monastic site contains a stone ringfort or cashel, early medieval churches, bee-hive huts, an underground passage, burial places, and ballauns or stones with hollowed-out bowl shapes. Before the modern sea wall was built, the sea was washing away parts of the cashel wall, one of the churches, and there were human skeletons protruding from the cliff. Recently, CHERISH has recorded limpets, animal and fish bone and even some possible pits in exposed cliff sections between the cashel and one of the ballaun stones that has a cross carved beside it.

The site was recorded using UAV sfm photogrammetry (Phantom 4 UAV, Trimble GNSS, Reality Capture)

Coastal Battery, Dalkey Island

The gun battery (SMR DU023-029011-) on Dalkey Island was constructed in 1805 as part of a series of structures along Dublin’s coastline to defend Dublin Bay during the Napoleonic wars and is accompanied by Martello Tower no. 9. It would have housed soldiers and artillery men stationed on the island and three 24-pounder guns which would have been used to defend the area of Dalkey Sound and the passage between the island and the Muglins.

The battery was constructed in three phases with the main walls, gun platforms and the officer and soldiers’ rooms added initially followed by the addition of a munitions store, and finally a newer larger magazine and privy between 1843 and 1852. The site was abandoned by the military in 1886. The site is now owned by Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council.

The site was recorded using a combination of terrestrial laser scanning and terrestrial trial and UAV SfM photogrammetry.

Saint Begnet’s Church is a National Monument in state care (SMR DU023-029003-), located on the northern end of Dalkey Island, Dublin Bay. Constructed probably during the 10th century from coursed granite masonry and large boulders. Above the doorway in the west gable a single bellcote is located where in the early 20th century a granite cross was inserted. The church was also partially altered in the early 19th century to accommodate the workmen who were building the Martello tower and battery on the island.

Martello Tower No. 9, Dalkey Island

Dalkey Island Martello Tower (No. 9) (SMR DU023-029009-) is one of 27 Martello towers and 2 batteries which were constructed in the early 19th Century to protect the Dublin coastline from potential invasion from Napoleon and the French Army. The Martello tower is located on the western side of Dalkey island at its highest point and has a commanding view across from Sandymount in the north to Bray in the south and is accompanied by a three gun battery on the southern tip of the island.

The tower was constructed in 1804 -1805 from dressed granite ashlar masonry. Internally there was a single floor level that contained a gunner’s room and magazine. It was originally constructed without a doorway with access gained through a ladder secured to the roof platform which contained two 24-pounder guns mounted on the circular gun platform. In the 1850’s the tower was used by the Coast Guard and by 1886 all military personnel had evacuated the island.

The site was recorded using a combination of terrestrial laser scanning, terrestrial SfM Photogrammetry and UAV SfM photogrammetry (Trimble TX8 Scanner, Canon EOS 6D II & 24mm Lens, Phantom 4 UAV, Trimble GNSS, Reality Capture).
