Dunabrattin, Co. Waterford

Description

One of the larger promontory forts (WA025-069001-) along the Copper Coast is located at Dunabrattin Head. This contains a smaller promontory fort within it. Dunabrattin means fort of the Britons suggesting there were close links with Britain during the Iron Age and early medieval period. Austrian Feldwebel Georg Fleischmann crash landed his Heinkel HE111H-5 bomber here on 1st April 1941 and was interred in Kildare. After the war he stayed in Ireland and set up Hibernia Pictures Ltd.

It is an important fishing area with people fishing off the rocks and Boatstrand fishing harbour is nearby. A concrete pillbox probably dating to the first world war is on the southern tip of the promontory. Slumping of the cliff of the smaller promontory fort (WA025-069002-) and narrow gullies between islets indicates the erosion. Hut sites and enclosures (WA025-069009-) have been reported within and outside the fort defences. These features are not present during ground survey today so geophysics and UAV has been undertaken within the fort. This has shown an outer ditch to the smaller promontory fort. Further circular features show several more possible enclosures that need further investigation.

The site was recorded using UAV SfM photogrammetry (Phantom 4 UAV, Trimble GNSS, Reality Capture). An additional geophysical survey was conducted which revealed remains of sub surface structures.
