Description

Flimston Bay Camp is one of the most spectacular promontory forts of Pembrokeshire, with three lines of curving landward defence, 120m in length, cutting off the eroding and collapsing limestone headland of Flimston Castles. The defences include a pair of close-set ramparts, comprising a double bank and ditch (10m wide by 1.1m high and 10m wide by 1.1m deep respectively) to the west of a centrally placed entrance. To the east of the entrance, the ramparts are sculpted out of sloping ground and comprise at least 2 scarps up to 3m high with an outer ditch, 12m wide and 2.1m deep. Later quarrying has disturbed the exact arrangement in this area. A third, in places very denuded bank, 8m wide and up to 1.4m high, with the faint traces of an outer ditch, is set some 30m to the north of the inner ramparts and suggests a different phase of enlargement or reduction. The interspace created could have functioned as a corralling place for stock, or as an annexe for trading, secure from the innermost enclosure. A later boundary bank and ditch runs through this area.

Description

Buckspool promontory fort, also known as The Castle, is a later prehistoric site situated on the south coast of Pembrokeshire within the Castlemartin Range MOD site, a kilometre west of St Govan’s chapel. It has previously been subject to stone robbing and damage, and is under threat from coastal erosion.

The site includes three ditch and rampart features, with an external spread of limestone outcropping which may have worked as another line of natural defences. Inside there is an impressive natural limestone blow-hole, which would have been present in prehistory.

The entranceway is marked with two ditch terminals. There also appears to be the footprint of a stone building, perhaps a tower, although the site has been significantly disturbed by later activity and so positively identifying prehistoric phasing is challenging. Inside the fort there are the remains of multiple roundhouse structures, suggesting domestic use of the inner fort.

Finds of pottery from the site include sherds of Black Burnished Ware (2nd / 3rd century), oxidized ware, and an Oxford colour coat mortarium rim (probable 4th century).

Description

Castell Bach is a mysterious ancient coastal fort in Ceredigion that is being greatly affected by coastal erosion. The date of the site is unknown, but it is thought that it was first constructed during prehistoric times and used by past people as a special meeting place.

The fort comprises a double ditch and bank with a larger concentric bank and ditch defining a possible outer annex area. The inner enclosure appears to surround the area where the small off-shore islet may have previously been joined to the mainland by a precarious land bridge, now partially lost due to erosion. Castell Bach will be carefully monitored and investigated by the CHERISH Project to unlocked more of site’s history before more is lost.
