Ferriter’s Castle (SMR KE042-034002-) and Promontory Fort (SMR KE042-034001-) are located on the Ballyferriter Headland, Dingle Peninsula, Co Kerry. Doon Point / Dún an Fheirtéaraigh is a long, narrow promontory extending slightly over 500 m SW from the mainland. This prehistoric fort is one of 95 coastal promontory forts in County Kerry, with a Mesolithic-Neolithic site (SMR KE042-035—-) at the nearby Ferriter’s Cove.

There are a number of hut sites and archaeological features visible within the boundaries of the fort, many heavily impacted by erosion. Reuse of the fort occurred by the 16th Century when the Anglo-Norman Feriter family constructed a castle.

The site was surveyed during the CHERISH excavation which included a trenches across the ditches of the older promontory fort and a hut site near the southwest tip of the promontory.

The site was recorded in May 2021 using SfM photogrammetric survey using an eBee plus and S.O.D.A. camera (ground sampling distance of 2.5 cm.). Successive surveys have identified area of active erosion and accretion on the monument in addition to geophysical surveys which have revealed remains of sub surface structures.

Bremore Head, North Dublin

Bremore Head is located 2.5km north of the town of Balbriggan. The Geological Survey Ireland conducted unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and scanning total station (STS) surveys over a 0.3 km² site to investigate the impacts of climate change on the 16th Century harbour of Newhaven and the nearby eroding cliff face.

The site contains several passage tombs (SMR DU002-001001-) forming the Bremore cemetery and is located on the north shore of the peninsula. The site also contains the remains of a medieval coastal settlement (SMR DU002-005—-)associated with the harbour.

The volcanic bedrock of the area formed approximately 460 million years ago during the closure of the Iapetus Ocean. The sediment that sits above this, and forms the eroding cliff-face near the old harbour is a sub-glacial till (commonly called boulder clay), laid down under an ice sheet approximately 20 thousand years ago. The harbour in the SE of the study area is defined by a 62m dry stone constructed pier, which extends from shoreline in a NE direction, running roughly parallel to the headland.

This survey was completed over three flights using the microdrones md4-3000 at mid tide on 19/02/2019

Little Saltee, County Wexford

Little Saltee lies 3 km off the Wexford coast near to Kilmore Quay and is a private island. The island is made of granite older than 400 million years formed during the Caledonian mountain building event.

Located on the south-west shore of the island is a coastal Promontory fort (SMR WX051B004—-) with a bank made of collapsed stone or earth. There are many shipwrecks in the area, particularly around St Patrick’s Causeway which is a long intertidal-subtidal gravel morain extending between the island and the mainland.

The island was recorded using in February 2021 using a SenseFly eBee plus with a S.O.D.A. camera flown at 100m with a ground sampling distance of 2.5 cm.

Reencaheragh Promontory Fort, Co. Kerry

3D model of Reencaheragh Castle (Doon Point), County Kerry, Ireland (SMR KE087-046) This long, broad promontory stretches 190m from a low neck on its landward side to steep cliffs at its seaward end. The narrow neck of land is defended by a 35.5m stone rampart, the interior of the fort can be accessed via the gateway or gatehouse set within the rampart wall, both likely to represent later additions to this large stone wall. A rectangular house sits just inside the interior of the stone Rampart.

This model was created from an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) survey using a DJI Phantom 4 Pro drone guided by the DJI Ground Station app. The average flying height is 80m, resulting in a ground pixel size of approx. 2.5cm. Photogrammetric processing is undertaken in Agisoft PhotoScan Pro, to generate a Digital Surface Model (DSM) and orthoimage of the local landscape.
